equa
Equa (or Equi) derives from “aequus,” a Latin adjective meaning “equal” or “level.” Words like equivalent, equilibrium, or equanimity are composed of the same root, Equa, as the primary building block, followed by a suffix that clarifies the meaning of the specific word. Derived from the same concept, the primary building block for this project is based on the notion of an extended sense of general poise and harmony, a state of balance. This is further defined by the variety of elements that characterize this state of balance. From the composition of volumes to the mass of solid walls contrasting the void of transparent glass partitions to the cooler concrete and terrazzo paired with warmer wood tones, a state of parity between opposing qualities establishes a balance where all attributes have an equivalent importance.
The first-floor volume rests gently above ground level on a waterfront property. Relating to the external conditions, the front facade is punctuated by a rhythmic sequence of solid wood-clad walls and transparent glass partitions strategically responding to the public street. On the other hand, deprived of solid elements, the transparency of the waterfront-facing facade establishes a composure of equal significance. Above, the perched second-floor volume reaches beyond the limits of the lower volume to establish a state of static equilibrium over its lower counterpart. On the same level, the exterior sun-screens offer the dual function of providing filtered views of the public street while providing an equal measure of privacy to the interior spaces.
The selection of the internal material palette is intrinsic to the sense of unity and stability in this design. The white interior terrazzo floor, used as a single component, is homogenous and smooth, creating a cool-toned element devoid of personality. However, when paired with the warm-tone wood comb siding, the material pairing creates a sensory experience that evokes a sense of harmony. This effect is reinforced by the composition, juxtaposition, and visual weight of the materials, enhancing the overall design.
