Cherokee Park ADU
Set in a single-family residential neighborhood that actively promotes Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU), the Owners have seized the opportunity to repurpose a section of their backyard for a unique structure. Unlike typical ADUs, often associated with affordable rental housing, this smaller structure is meticulously designed to be adaptable, catering to the Owners' evolving needs. Whether it's a home study, a space for a growing teenager, or a haven for an aging parent, this ADU is equipped with all the essential living elements to ensure independence. Its flexible design is a testament to its adaptability, allowing for various uses and providing a sense of reassurance for the future.
Similar to the variety of architectural styles in their neighborhood, the Owners inclined the new smaller structure to be a counterpart in style and size to the Arts and Crafts primary residence that they have extensively renovated. While the Arts and Crafts movement is characterized by exposed beams, heavy posts, rafters that extend past the roof line, and an emphasis on the use of wood in decorative elements, the new modern structure is simple in form, with exposed monolithic concrete load bearing walls and roof slab, large windows taking advantages of the lush garden and deprived of decoration.
Contrary to the Arts and Crafts primary residence that is heavily grounded at the front of the property, the small ADU is strategically surrounded by shallow pools of water that contribute to its light presence. Constrained to be located in the south-west corner of the property, the new structure strategically utilizes the solid concrete walls against the neighboring properties on two sides for privacy. The textural quality of the board-formed concrete captures the artistry of the older architectural style as to offer a modern interpretation of its counterpart. The remaining facades, comprised of large sliding glass doors, open to the garden. The extension of the roof plane and floor slab beyond the glass creates the illusion that the small footprint of the floor plan stretches beyond its physical limits. With the dual purpose of providing shade and privacy to the interior spaces, a sliding screen on the outside of the structure can be placed in the most purposeful location at certain times of the day or night.
